AB OBJECTIVE: To determine the role of multiplicity of partners as a risk
factor for HIV infection among bisexual males attending an anonymous HIV
testing site from Jan 93 to Jan 94. METHODS: The clientele of an
anonymous testing site in Rio de Janeiro was interviewed by a trained
professional, during pre-test counseling, using a standardized and
structured questionnaire, for assessing sexual activity and number of
different sexual partners during the previous five years (male and
female). Bisexual behavior, multiplicity of partners and test result
were correlated using X2 and OR with 95% CI. RESULTS: 2027 successive
interviews were analysed. 314 (15.4%) were of male bisexuals. Two groups
were done according to sex and number of sexual partners in previous
five years. TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME. DISCUSSION AND
CONCLUSION: These results suggest that the risk of HIV infection in
bisexual behavior is related to homosexual activity; the number of male
partners increase risk for HIV infection independently of the number of
female partners. Therefore, bisexual behaviour can be considered as an
important mode of spread HIV infection to women.
